What is Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA)?
LCA is a rare inherited retinal disease characterized by severe vision loss at birth. While some children are born with little or no vision, others may have significant vision loss in the first few years of life, stable vision for a period of time, and then eventually complete vision loss as the retina deteriorates into total blindness.
What We Do
Founded in 2014 as Sofia Sees Hope, Hope in Focus is a nonprofit 501(c)3 patient advocacy organization dedicated to generating awareness, raising funds for research, and providing support, education and outreach to the LCA and rare inherited retinal disease community.

Toprak Kulekci is a lively seven-year-old ballerina from Ankara, Turkey. When she was born in 2017, her father, Haydar, a software engineer, and mother, Gizem, an agricultural engineer, had no forewarning that their daughter could inherit a blinding retinal disease until early concerns about her eyesight led to a diagnosis of LCA1, leaving her with only five percent vision.![]()
In Turkey, resources for LCA and vision impairment are scarce. Motivated to help, Haydar began researching online and drew inspiration from organizations like Hope in Focus. In 2021, he founded the Inclusive and Accessible Life Association to provide information and resources to support visually impaired individuals in Turkey.![]()
Thanks to her parent's dedication, Toprak thrives in school and enjoys ballet lessons, performing on stage with her class. ![]()
