Hope in Focus | Part-time | Remote
Hope in Focus is a 501(c)(3) rare disease advocacy organization supporting a global community of individuals and families living with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a rare inherited retinal disease that causes blindness or severe low vision from birth.
We are a small, nimble team based in southeastern Connecticut, working primarily remotely, with occasional in-person participation (approximately 5–6 events or meetings per year).
Who We Are
Hope in Focus sits at the intersection of advocacy and science. We center the lived experiences of the LCA and inherited retinal disease community while translating complex research into meaningful, accessible information. Our work bridges the gap between the people who inform the science and the science that transforms lives.

We are seeking an experienced writer to create one to three stories per month that elevate community voices and explain the science, research, and pathways driving treatments for blindness. This role is essential to advancing our mission through clear, compassionate, and accurate storytelling.
The Writer will collaborate closely with the Hope in Focus team and serve as a friendly, informed, and trustworthy voice for the LCA community—reflecting hope, optimism, and care in all communications.

- Write 1–3 stories per month for the Hope in Focus website and newsletter
- Interview individuals living with LCA and caregivers to share lived experiences
- Interview researchers, industry, and regulatory stakeholders within the LCA community
- Ensure consistent voice, tone, and language aligned with the Hope in Focus brand
- Propose new story ideas and content opportunities
Qualifications
- Proven writing experience, preferably in nonprofit, healthcare, or science-related settings
- Degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field
- Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a small team

- Proficiency with Google Workspace
- Excellent interpersonal and interviewing skills
Ideal Candidate
- Mission-driven and eager to learn about rare disease advocacy
- Curious, thoughtful, and detail-oriented
- Empathetic and comfortable speaking with people from diverse backgrounds
- Committed to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion
- Passionate about storytelling and clear communication
Compensation
This is a part-time, contract position. Compensation is provided on a per-story basis.
- $500–$650 per story (approximately 1,200 words)
- Rate includes required interviews, research, writing, and up to three rounds of revisions
- Additional revisions or expanded scope may be compensated separately, as agreed in advance
Hope in Focus is open to discussing alternate compensation structures (e.g., hourly or monthly retainers) with qualified candidates.
